Volunteers are needed to conduct literacy-based classes for women and men at the Tazewell County Justice Center and men at the FCI-Pekin and its satellite camp. Each weekly ninety-minute class at TCJC is stand alone and may cover topics such as employment skills, life skills such as setting personal goals or keeping a journal, and GED instruction. Quarterly eight-week classes at the FCI include a book club, creative writing, public speaking, and parenting.
Volunteers are required to complete a background check and additional training at the institutions beyond the YWCA's pre-service adult literacy tutor training.

Mission Statement
Heart of Illinois Adult Literacy Center believes that all adults should be given the opportunity to improve the quality of their lives through literacy. We support learner-centered instruction and encourage each individual to attain her personal educational goals. YWCA is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.
Description
Begun in 1985, the purpose of Heart of Illinois Adult Literacy Center is to provide free, volunteer-based education services to adult learners who want to increase their reading, writing, speaking, listening and math skills; achieve personal goals such as read to their children or get a driver's license; and further their education, training or employment. This is accomplished through one-on-one tutoring at locations throughout Tazewell County in literacy, adult basic education, pre-GED, and English for speakers of other languages.
