Do you like meeting new people and learning about different cultures? If so, this opportunity is for you!
FCPS Adult ESOL is seeking volunteer assistants to help with Tues. & Thurs. morning conversation groups in various classes for the Spring Term at our Bryant location in Alexandria, VA (2709 Popkins Ln.; Alexandria, VA 22306).
Each session takes place from 10:00 a.m.-12:15 p.m. on Tuesday & Thursday mornings, and will involve visits to various classes to engage in conversation groups with Adult ESOL students in each class. Volunteers will receive guidance and activities from the Lead Teacher at the site prior to each session. Volunteers available on both mornings, or just one of those mornings each week are encouraged to respond.
If interested, please e-mail Jennifer Beilke (jabeilke@fcps.edu). All interested volunteers will be asked to meet with Jennifer for a mini-orientation (about 30-45 mins.) before their first conversation group session at Bryant. Ideally, we'd like someone who can start on May 2, 2017. However, we'll consider those who can start lthe following week, as well.
Experience working with English language learners is helpful, but not required. Anyone interested in helping Adult immigrants and foreign residents in our community engage in conversations in English on various topics is highly encouraged to participate in this volunteer opportunity. Please also note that we do hope to continue the conversation groups after this Spring, so we hope to hear from those who can commit to helping out in future terms, as well (Summer Term runs from July-Aug., and Fall Term runs Sept.-Dec.). For now, the commitment is just through June 15, 2017.

Mission Statement
As an integral part of Adult and Community Education (ACE) of Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), the mission of the Adult English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Program is to provide opportunities for adult English language learners (ELLs) to acquire the proficiency in English and cross-cultural communication they need to succeed in their roles as workers, citizens, family members and lifelong learners.
Description
The FCPS Adult ESOL program is dedicated to providing adult students with the practical English language they need in their everyday lives, as well as English skills that will help them advance into post-secondary education and career and technical training. Because our students come to us with diverse learning needs and goals, we utilize approaches and practices that integrate students’ voices in the instructional process. We regard teachers and students as partners in the learning experience. Our students are expected to be actively engaged and responsible for their own progress. Our teachers are facilitators who provide opportunities and guidance. Above all, we strive to create a supportive and challenging learning atmosphere where a community of learners can grow and achieve their goals.
