ORGANIZATION: L.A. Works

H.E.L.P. is a non-profit tutoring center that teaches students 9 years old to adults how to read, write and study for free. We also offer training for volunteer tutors, who then are matched one-on-one with our students. We ask that tutors commit at least three hours per week, at their own schedule, to volunteer. The first step is a tour of the program so that you may see first-hand what we do and how you can be a part of it.

Event Description: This is a free tutoring center for children, youth and adults. Tutors are needed as we like to provide as close to one-on-one attention to our students as possible. Our tutors get the chance to really help someone by teaching how to read and then teaching them how to study and learn. Once done with our program a person is able to go learn literally anything they want! The world is open to them and their future is bright, where before coming here their future was dark and hopeless--our graduates have gone on to graduate from high school, college and have successful, prosperous lives.

Volunteer Role & Responsibilities: Training is provided for tutors in math, reading, or writing (depending on the volunteers area of focus). H.E.L.P. encourages an orientation for the volunteers to get an idea of the organization. The only educational requirement for being a mentoring tutor is an eighth grade reading level.

Requirements: All that is needed is a strong desire to help others along with a passion for teaching and seeing others grow and succeed. Dress code is business casual, with no torn or revealing attire. We want our tutors to look professional and set good examples.

Benefits: Inspire and make a difference in youths and learning adults lives by being involved in their education process. With the help of volunteer tutors, kids and adults are able to succeed and raise their self-esteem. Help them develop literacy skills to succeed in life.
