South Carolina 4-H through the program area Healthy Lifestyles is designed to assist youth in acquiring the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behavior changes necessary for the improvement of diet and nutritional well-being. The Healthy Lifestyles Cooking Club is a team of youth that cooks throughout the year and prepares for the SC 4-H Healthy Lifestyles Challenge, a yearly competition at the SC State Fair. Volunteers will interact with 4-H youth through instruction and will become familiar with youth program structure and management.

The 4-H Healthy Lifestyles Challenge is modeled after such competitions as the Food Network’s "Iron Chef," challenges teams of 4-H members to create a dish they are assigned. Team members must prepare the dish, make a presentation about it to the judges, interpret a label, plan a menu utilizing the dish and prepare a fitness plan. The presentation will include information about the serving size, nutritional value, how to utilize the dish in a meal through the USDA’s MyPlate standards, and the cost of the dish. The 4-H Healthy Lifestyles Challenge allows 4-H members to demonstrate their culinary and food safety skills to judges and observers.

Objective: Assist in the preparation of teams for the regional and state competitions as they develop the skills and knowledge of how to prepare healthy meals and read food labels. Team meets the 3 rd Monday of each month from 3:00-6:00pm.
