Iceland is a place of amazement for volunteers of all backgrounds. Iceland's geography is both unique and formidable, with the fault line that the nation rests on gradually widening resulting in volcanic activity and earthquakes up and down the divide. Bright summer nights, and the mystic and beautiful Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) in winter grace volunteers with wonder. 11% of the country is covered by glaciers, including Vatnajökull, the largest in Europe. Icelandic sagas from the 13th century provide a historical record for the country, one of the smallest in terms of population with only 310,000 inhabitants. As a volunteer in Iceland, you may be surprised to find somewhat mild temperatures throughout the year, thanks to the ocean gulf-stream.
United Planet is the US and Canadian partner of the International Cultural Youth Exchange, or ICYE. As a volunteer in Iceland, you will be hosted by AUS, ICYE's Icelandic partner organization. AUS has been organizing home stays and volunteer projects in Iceland for more than fifty years in an effort to promote experiential learning.
Possible volunteer projects include:
- Working with people living with physical and mental disabilities
- Assisting in a local health clinic that emphasizes utilizing preventive measures and adopting a healthier lifestyle to avoid various illnesses
- Looking after elderly citizens in a local residential community
- Supporting local organizations that assist people addicted to alcohol and other substances

Established in 2001, United Planet offers personalized, immersive, international experiential learning, service-learning, volunteer, and internship experiences to an extensive network of partners in more than 30 countries. Volunteers and interns have helped address important global issues while broadening cross-cultural understanding, developing leadership and other 21st century skills, building bridges across divides, and forging cohesive and productive cross-border relationships.A United Planet Quest is truly the ultimate educational adventure combining all elements of cultural learning, exploration, and humanitarian service. By working closely with the local people, United Planet volunteers make a positive difference in a range of areas, such as community development, healthcare, education, healthcare, environmental conservation, and more.
United Planet Quests enable volunteers to broaden global perspectives and cross-cultural understanding, improve foreign language skills, work in international teams, develop leadership skills, and most importantly, build lifelong friendships
