ORGANIZATION: United Planet

Steep mountains and lush forests beckon volunteers to Taiwan's sunny shores. One of the most densely populated countries in the world, Taiwan is an island nation the size of the combined land area of US states Maryland and Delaware. 23 million people make up this friendly but crowded country. Volunteers who want an urban experience but love the wild, tropical outdoors were made for this place. The Taiwanese people are divided politically between those who want reunification with China and those who continue to support Taiwanese independence. Taiwan has a history of being claimed by world powers first settled by pacific islanders, migration from China began in the 15th century, and centuries of occupation by the Portuguese, Dutch, Spanish and then Chinese followed. Taiwan's origins as an agricultural nation still shine as good food, great variety, and even night markets abound.

United Planet is the US and Canadian partner of the International Cultural Youth Exchange, or ICYE. As a volunteer in Taiwan, you will be hosted by ICYE Taiwan, ICYE's partner organization here. ICYE Taiwan was established in 1992 and has more than 1,000 volunteers who serve and share in cross-cultural experiences.

Possible volunteer projects include:
- Volunteering with children and youth from underprivileged families by organizing games, creating workshops, and assisting them with their homework
- Working with children and adults living with a variety of disabilities; tasks may include helping with academic work, teaching vocational education topics, and physical and language therapy
- Assisting in a nursing home, helping to create a joyful environment for the elderly residents

Please visit our website for more information about the projects!
