Mission Statement

Year Up’s mission is to close the Opportunity Divide by providing urban young adults with the skills, experience, and support that will empower them to reach their potential through professional careers and higher education.

Description

Why Its Important: Year Up was founded to address the inequity of opportunity that is experienced by millions of young people, while simultaneously providing a solution to the talent shortage that our nation’s leading employers are facing. We achieve our mission through partnering with community colleges and high growth companies to provide an accelerated, hands on, professional skills and training corps.

How It Works: We identify urban young adults who are highly motivated but lack opportunities to enter the mainstream economy. Our young adults spend six months in the classroom learning market relevant skills, alongside the soft skills that employers are looking for. Our young adults then transition into an internship with one of our corporate partners, applying their skills and gaining critical work experience. Finally, these young adults who have spent a year honing their professional skills graduate the program, ready to launch meaningful careers and contribute to our economy and community.
