ORGANIZATION: Catholic Charities of Boston

  • 13 people are interested

People Who Need Services:

Our clients are refugees from all over the world, specifically Somalia, Eritrea, the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They range in age from children to older adults.

Duties:

Help our clients practice their English! Many of the refugees we work with indicate that they could always use more help practicing conversational English, so we pair volunteers with clients in order to help develop these skills. As a volunteer, you’ll be able to help by spending time with a client and helping them acclimate to their new neighborhood.

Requirements:

Submit a resume and you will be contacted to set up an interview and place you in an upcoming Volunteer Orientation. Any experience volunteering or working with people is a plus, as well as willingness to combat stereotypes surrounding refugees and immigrants both during your volunteer hours and outside of them. All volunteers at Catholic Charities are required to have a background check.

Time Desired:

Volunteers must be able to make a 3-6 month commitment, with twice per month meetings with your matched client. A successful outcome for our clients includes a positive trusting relationship with a volunteer. If you have 2 hours, twice a month, to spend time helping someone acclimate to a new home, then please consider volunteering.

Location:

Catholic Charities Labouré Center, 275 West Broadway, South Boston, MA. *accessible by public transportation & limited parking available

Opportunities to volunteer in the city of Boston, as well as Brockton, Lynn, and more are available.

Mission Statement

Catholic Charities is building a just and compassionate society rooted in the dignity of all people.

Description

For more than 100 years, Catholic Charities has continued its mission of building a just and compassionate society rooted in the dignity of all people.

As one of the largest providers of social services in Massachusetts, Catholic Charities offers approximately 90 programs and services in 23 locations from Lawrence to Brockton and throughout to Boston. More than 185,000 people are helped each year regardless of faith.

Our programs and services are provided in four major areas:

  • As an anti-poverty agency, Catholic Charities responds to the needs of the poor and working poor in our communities. This is accomplished by providing or helping them access emergency food, fuel, utility, rental, and mortgage assistance.
  • Catholic Charities provides a variety of support services for children and families in order to strengthen and preserve families and provide children and youth with the opportunities they deserve.
  • Adult Education (ESOL) and workforce development programs prepare adult learners to take advantage of better employment opportunities to support their families
  • With a variety of multicultural and multilingual services for immigrants and refugees, Catholic Charities is working to help these populations adjust to their new surroundings and become active participants in their communities.

Catholic Charities is a self-supporting, non-profit organization that relies on public, private, and United Way contributions.
