Volunteer Support Group Facilitators Needed! Virtual Opportunity during COVID-19

Compass Center is accepting applications for our upcoming virtual Support Group Facilitator Training that will begin in early September 2022. We seek dedicated individuals with diverse backgrounds and life experiences. Spanish speakers are strongly encouraged to apply.

Volunteer Support Group Facilitators are expected to commit to serving for a period of at least 12-18 months, which will include approximately 20 hours of training, group sessions, and planning meetings with a co-facilitator and the Support Group Coordinator (SGC) as needed. During an 8-week support group expected time commitment is approximately 3 hours each week.

Volunteer Support Group Facilitator Role and Responsibilities:

  • Co-facilitate support groups (domestic violence, divorce/separation, self-esteem, LGBT domestic violence survivors, writing for domestic violence survivors, Latinx groups, Black and African American survivors groups, arts-based support group for survivors) with Compass Center staff or volunteers.
  • Complete appropriate planning and preparation for support groups with co-facilitator and SGC.
  • Conduct support group sessions and any other client contact ethically; being mindful of dual relationships, practicing cultural humility, being aware of the limits of confidentiality, and seeking appropriate supervision.
  • Offer crisis intervention to support group members and make referrals to Compass Center staff or other community resources as needed.

Preferred Characteristics and Background of Volunteer Support Group Facilitator : Bachelor’s degree or higher, advocacy experience in the field of domestic violence or similar field, ability to work independently and with others, strong communication and listening skills, cultural competence with diverse populations, previous experience participating in or leading support groups or group therapy, excellent self-care practices, and a passion for helping and supporting others.
