ORGANIZATION: IKIRWA SCHOOL PROJECT

Volunteer
Our very first volunteer and his students showing off an art project

We are looking for volunteers with primary school teaching experience to
work alongside our staff in K-4 classrooms for a period from two weeks to one year. We are looking for opportunities for our staff to learn modern classroom teaching methods with emphasis on constructivist approach, independent study, collaborative learning, and alternatives to rote teaching. We also would welcome special education and ESL specialists.

We also welcome volunteers without formal teaching background who are interested in being tutors, working with individual students to improve basic reading, conversation and math skills.

Our school is in-session year-round, with three month-long breaks in April, August and December. We request that volunteers under the age of 18 are accompanied by adults.

We ask our volunteers to arrange for their own travel to Tanzania. We can arrange for transportation to and from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for $50. Fees are subject to change. We are able to provide modest accomodations, bottled water and 3 meals a day for up to 5 volunteers near school premises for a daily fee of between $10-$15.

For our US-based volunteers we are able to provide a tax deduction letter for the cost of travel an boarding.

About IKIRWA SCHOOL PROJECT

Location:

907 GOLD ST, JUNEAU, AK 99801, US

Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide the option of English language instruction to the children in rural Tanzanian village of Midawe and its surroundings. We leverage volunteer and NGO resources to provide world-class academic instruction and education materials as well as career development opportunities for the teachers. Our goal is to ensure that all our students score in the top quartile of the TOEFL test at the time of graduation and our Tanzanian instructors do so within 3 years of joining the staff.

Description

Our vision is to build a small school that makes a big difference and stands on its own without depending on outside donors for day to day operations. We are growing organically and pragmatically, building a track record and using our success to attract donor funds for capital improvements.

We are taking a multi-phase approach to building and establishing this school, starting with kindergarten classes and gradually into a single-stream education program for up to 300 students. Tanzanian students are taught in Swahili and learn English as a second language. Yet, English is the language of both commerce and higher learning, limiting the prospects of government school graduates, especially those who are unable to afford remedial language instruction , which is usually needed to gain sufficient proficiency.
