The Volunteer Public Relations Representative role is integral to the success of Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., and the ability of our organization to effectively fulfill our mission: to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of Law Enforcement and related agencies throughout the country.

This position requires dedication, motivation, drive, ambition, and commitment. It will require, at times, flexibility as it pertains to scheduling, including hours in the evening or on the weekend. The successful candidate will have familiarity with all aspects of public relations, including marketing principles and practices; copyright laws; radio and television broadcast production processes; and, production for publications online and in print; internet applications as they related to public information activities; fundamentals of writing, composition, and layout.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Volunteer Public Relations Representative may have responsibilities in the areas of media contacts, creating press releases, disseminating press releases, verifying release of required PR by recipient agencies, writing, updating mailing lists, scheduling, material preparation, publicity, information management, and other areas as determined necessary. This position may also be responsible for planning, organizing, and/or directing special projects or programs within the organization as directed by the President or board of directors.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Writing and editing of official communications or materials, including internal and external emails and press releases.
Maintain professional and timely communication with any agencies, departments and/or volunteers, at all times.
Monitor timelines for prompt and effective communication with agencies/departments and board of directors
Assist with the preparation of publications, materials, and programs for events.
Compile and provide to the board of the directors a summary of the completed activities or other information deemed necessary.
Coordinate distribution of information or required corrections with agencies/departments and news media, as appropriate.
Review written content, online or in print, to ensure the accuracy of information provided and consistency with Vested Interest in K9s content standards.
Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination of education, training, and/or experience equivalent to a 4-year degree program with major coursework in English, Journalism, Communication, or a related field.
Strong command of the English language.
Proficient in the use of computers, internet, and other office equipment.
Extensive social media experience.

REQUIRED SKILLS
Current/previous experience working with any or all of the following: media, public relations, press releases, and journalism/reporting
High skill: Microsoft Word and Excel, internet, social media, email, data entry, Dropbox and/or Google Docs
Team work: ability to independently initiate projects and activities as well as function as part of a team
Working with others: Excellent interpersonal skills
Leadership skills: ability to be coach and be coached
Time management and organizational skills: Ability to coordinate and execute multiple projects at the same time.
Professional communication: proper grammar, spelling, and phone and email etiquette.
Project management: able to track multiple details and statuses along with providing updates and ensuring timelines are kept on track.
Data accuracy: maintains complete and correct records

  • Three Chevy Tahoe patrol vehicles custom fitted for a K9 Unit valued at over $50,000 each
  • One Advanced Canine Medical Trainer (K9 Diesel) a full-body state-of-the-art skills trainer for canine first responders that simulates active breathing, audio queues and over 28 different features and medical intervention sites at $62,000

All of our programs are made possible with funds raised through contributions, grants and fundraising events.
