ORGANIZATION: United Planet

Volunteers in Nigeria get a glimpse of the challenges and successes of this up-and-coming nation. As the country with the third-largest democracy in Africa and the largest population in Africa, Nigeria is uniquely poised as one of the strongest regional powers on the continent. Nigeria is blessed with hundreds of miles of glorious coastlines, national parks that create a haven for wildlife and endangered species, and ancient sites that bring fascinated travelers from the world over. The street market in Lekki, with colorful jewelry and intricate wood carvings - all handmade, is a popular spot for volunteers to visit along with Dalla Hill and the Lekki Conservation Center. Nigerians are one of the most educated and enterprising populations in Africa, as evidenced by Nigeria's position. However, keeping Nigeria united is a growing challenge.

United Planet is the US and Canadian partner of the International Cultural Youth Exchange, or ICYE. As a volunteer in Nigeria, you will be hosted by ICYE Nigeria, ICYE's Nigerian partner organization. ICYE Nigeria is staffed by former volunteers who offer a firsthand perspective on the volunteer experience.

Possible volunteer projects include:
- Assisting local organizations with fundraising, developing activities and workshops
- Supporting troubled families and supervising children’s playtime

Please visit our website for more information about the projects.
