Volunteers looking for an inviting community in an African paradise should look no further. Mozambique is a winding, beautiful country in southern Africa with an enormous coast that mirrors Madagascar directly to its east. Mozambique consists of low-lying coastal plains covered with palm trees, rising to higher plateaus toward the western border which are covered in grasslands and mountains. Two of southern Africa's largest rivers, the Zambezi and the Limpopo, flow through the country. After years of political strife, Mozambique's constitution was adopted in 1990, and the country is now a fairly stable presidential republic. Locals in Mozambique are relaxed and informal, and volunteers take pleasure in the traditional art and music scene that abounds here.
United Planet is the US and Canadian partner of the International Cultural Youth Exchange, or ICYE. As a volunteer in Mozambique, you will be hosted by Ajude, ICYE's partner organization there. A group of students started Ajude in 1993 as a way to help with reconstruction after the long and devastating civil war. Today, volunteers in Mozambique continue to play an important role.
Possible volunteer projects include:
- Assisting in a school with teaching classes, leading activities, and more
- Working closely with at-risk children through a local organization
- Helping with civic education and awareness campaigns against HIV/AIDS and drugs
- Training young Mozambicans, who possess exceptional artistic talent, in web design and other related fields
