Museum docent leading Girl Scouts on a tour.

Welcome! Thank you so much for considering volunteering your time and talents to the Central Sierra Historical Society’s Museum (CSHS). We are very glad you are thinking about joining us!

Before we go any further let me assure you that no formal training or experience is required to become a great CSHS docent. Many people shy away from volunteering because they are afraid they won’t be successful or don’t have the background to be a docent. THAT IS JUST NOT TRUE! Enthusiasm and commitment are the only qualifications needed to be a great docent.

A great docent is a pleasant, affable person who is comfortable speaking with strangers. A great docent is flexible and able to roll with the punches, because there is no way to anticipate what can happen on the museum floor. Great docents know when to "take charge" and guide visitors through the exhibits and also know when to let the visitors explore the museum on their own. Great docents are willing to devote time to learning about the museum and to studying the docent handbook. Great docents are willing to "shadow" experienced docents as they go about their job.

Docents meet once a month for an hour from April - November on the second Friday of the month at 9:00 A.M. to go over their schedules, talk about upcoming events, etc.

For more information on becoming a docent or to sign up please contact us at cshs@sierrahistorical.org or by calling (559)841-4478

Mission Statement

The mission of CSHS is to enrich the cultural and educational experiences of visitors to the Sierra Nevada Mountains, by deepening their understanding of the human and natural history of this area. CSHS hopes to inspire future generations by bringing to life the challenges and achievements of the people who lived here.

Description

The Central Sierra Historical Society and Museum, Inc. is a 501 (c)(3) public benefit corporation. CSHS was founded in 1991, but its roots date back to the early 1980’s, when a group of individuals in the central Sierra recognized the need for an organized effort to preserve the fast-disappearing history of the area. In addition to the museum building, CSHS is actively preserving local historical treasures, such as a 1902 Dolbeer Steam Donkey, a 1912 caboose from the SJ&E Railroad, a 1920 Mack Truck, the Pine Logging Camp, and collecting the oral histories of area pioneers. The "Museum Without Walls" series of lectures, field trips, and social events have helped to build educational programs. There is a demonstration only powerhouse on the grounds that was dedicated in 2013. This is the only running powerhouse in a museum setting throughout the whole world. The gift shop at the museum provides adults’ and children’s’ books on California history, Native American culture, pioneer lives, natural history, wildlife, environmental issues facing the West, and recreational activities in the Sierra.
