Interested in volunteering at a brand new exhibition in Los Angeles’ Little

Tokyo? We would love to have you!

Go For Broke National Education Center (GFBNEC) recently opened a new educational exhibition called The Defining Courage Experience in the historic Nishi Hongwanji Building in the Little Tokyo Historic District of Los Angeles. The exhibition explores the concept of courage through the lives of the young Japanese Americans of World War II, and asks modern visitors to act with similar courage in their own lives. The exhibition is dynamic, hands-on, and experience-based approach, engaging visitors through participatory learning experiences. The Defining Courage Experience encourages dialogue and critical thinking about tolerance and social justice in a democratic society, stimulates civic awareness, and fosters empowerment. The new exhibit space is seeking volunteer Exhibit Ambassadors.

Mission Statement

To educate and inspire character and equality through the virtue and valor of our World War II American veterans of Japanese ancestry.

Description

"Go For Broke" was the motto of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, an Army unit comprised of Japanese Americans from Hawaii and the mainland United States.

For high-rolling gamblers in Hawaii in the 1940s, it was slang for "shooting the works," or risking everything for the big win. For the Nisei soldiers, "go for broke" meant that they would put everything on the line to win the war against the Germans in Europe and the war against racial prejudice at home.

What We Do

  • HONOR the Nisei Soldiers of World War II
  • EXPLORE the Meaning of Courage
  • PRESERVE the Life Stories of Veterans
  • SHARE the Veterans' Stories
  • RESOURCES for the Classroom
