Come volunteer in Finland, one of the largest countries in Europe. Finland has held a unique global position because of its borders with Russia to the east, Norway in the north, and the Gulf of Finland and the Gulf of Bothnia to the south. Nearly one-third of the country lies above the Arctic Circle, with the coastal lowlands and central lake system making up the rest. Winter temperatures average 0 to -35 degrees Celsius! Finland is lauded for one of the best public healthcare and education systems in the world while many other public services (think swimming halls, gyms, state-of-the-art libraries) are available to all at no or low-cost. Volunteers here find meaning through learning from Finland's complex culture and sharing ideas.
United Planet is the US and Canadian member of the International Cultural Youth Exchange, or ICYE. As a volunteer in Finland, you will be hosted by ICYE Maailmanvaihto, ICYE's partner organization there. Maailmanvaihto is the Finnish word for the world exchange, and was created in 1958 with exactly that goal: for youth from all over the world to exchange places in an effort to learn from each other.
Possible volunteer projects include:
- Assisting in a kindergarten or elementary school, both in the classroom and with other tasks as needed
- Helping at a foster home or at an organization that works with people with disabilities, including learning about and assisting in various types of therapy, art classes, agriculture, garden work, animal care, and more

Established in 2001, United Planet offers personalized, immersive, international experiential learning, service-learning, volunteer, and internship experiences to an extensive network of partners in more than 30 countries. Volunteers and interns have helped address important global issues while broadening cross-cultural understanding, developing leadership and other 21st century skills, building bridges across divides, and forging cohesive and productive cross-border relationships.A United Planet Quest is truly the ultimate educational adventure combining all elements of cultural learning, exploration, and humanitarian service. By working closely with the local people, United Planet volunteers make a positive difference in a range of areas, such as community development, healthcare, education, healthcare, environmental conservation, and more.
United Planet Quests enable volunteers to broaden global perspectives and cross-cultural understanding, improve foreign language skills, work in international teams, develop leadership skills, and most importantly, build lifelong friendships
