MassEquality Interns Collecting Signatures

Field organizing interns work to assemble the community to take action on key social justice issues. An internship at MassEquality allows individuals to gain experience with the inner workings of a successful political non-profit while making a difference in the LGBTQ community.

Through electoral organizing, legislative organizing, public education, and a presence at community events, the field team creates positive changes in the lives of the Massachusetts’ LGBTQ community. Legislation and educational outreach depends on the time at which the internship begins (i.e. summer 2016 interns will focus on electoral organizing). Additionally, each intern can choose a concentration that fits their particular interests and works with coalition partners to explore that interest. Examples of concentrations that interns may choose from include social media, youth outreach, state-wide volunteer coordination, etc.

Key social justice issues that MassEquality focuses on include, but are not limited to:

  • Transgender equality
  • HIV/AIDS legislation
  • Comprehensive sexual education reform
  • Banning harmful conversion therapy practices
  • Providing LGBTQ Elders with Culturally Competent Care

Interns will learn skills that will enable them to:

  • Recruit, train, and coach a team of capable volunteers to participate in phone banks, canvasses, and other volunteer actions
  • Deliver presentations and trainings to advance public education
  • Communicate the urgency and importance of issues affecting the LGBTQ community

Qualified applicants should be passionate about social justice, hardworking, and have excellent time management and communication skills. Prior campaign experience or volunteer coordination is not necessary. However, experience working with issues of social justice and change in any capacity is a plus.

Applications and Time Commitment:

Summer 2016 internships can begin in late May. If you would require a later start date please inform us of your availability in your cover letter. Timelines for yearlong internships are discussed on an individual basis. Time commitments range from 15-30 hours per week.

Please email a resume and cover letter to Emily Michalakes at emily@massequality.org.

MassEquality is an equal opportunity employer. People of color, women, LGBQ and transgender people are encouraged to apply.
