Purpose: To make a difference in the lives of at-risk children in a diverse multicultural setting and provide reading enrichment activities for students needing educational support.
Position Summary: Provide general support for the Reading Enrichment focus of the Homework Club administered by Feed Lake Highlands. This position focuses on establishing relationships with a specific grade level group of students from low income families. Most of the children are members of Spanish speaking families and struggle with their reading skills. All volunteer positions are expected to support the creation of "community" through development of positive, cooperative relationships with students, their families and other volunteers.
Primary Roles and Responsibilities:
Read with students using guided, leveled readers in small groups.
Play games that promote reading skills and comprehension.
Work with sight word cards, sentence strips, journals, etc.
Maintain accurate student attendance records.
Assist in the implementation of the discipline protocol.
Attend 2 team meetings per year.
Perform other duties as needed.
Qualifications:
Enjoy working with children.
Friendly, enjoy talking with children, smiles easily, patient and understanding.
Willing to learn and teach new games.
Work well as part of a team.
Self-motivated, enthusiastic and positive outlook.
Dependable.
Must pass a Lake Highlands UMC background check if over age 18
Bilingual skills are a plus!
Time Commitment:
Tuesday and/or Thursday shifts - 2:45pm - 5:15pm
September - May
The program follows the RISD school calendar.
Training is provided.

This growing organization is beginning its fifth year of making an impact at the New Room Community Center, located near Skillman St. and Whitehurst Ln. in northeast Dallas, Texas. We feed the physical, educational, and spiritual needs of those in our community who are seeking help in attaining a more self-sufficient life. In 2012, Feed Lake Highlands was formed as a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation. We have created and nurtured partnerships with the North Texas Food Bank, Crossroads Community Services, Skyview Elementary, Lake Highlands United Methodist Church, and the Lake Highlands YMCA.
