Aloha, Project Hawai'i, Inc., is a nonprofit organization run 100% by volunteers and solely supported by public donations. Our mission is to enhance the lives of homeless children and help them escape their cycle of poverty. This is our 10th anniversary for our teen mentoring summer camp. Over the years we have won several awards for our programs accomplishments, and this year we would like to continue that honor.

Because this is our 12th year, we actually have a very special year planned for some of our past graduates to return to be teen mentors to the younger homeless children at camp. We wish for them to share their successes and experiences, challenges, etc.

Every year we try to provide a wide-variety of teen workshops that can be anything from learning more about themselves, building self-esteem to learning leadership or mentoring skills. The workshops are typically in a very relaxed setting that allows the teens to feel comfortable and more open to sharing their true feelings or life experiences while in the workshop. This year we are hoping to have a few of these type workshops in the area of either Hilo or Kea'au.
HOW DO YOU MAKE THE DIFFERENCE:

  1. You would plan and implement a workshop, typically 2-3 hours.
  2. Your workshop would do one or more of the following: Build self-awareness, learn a life or social skill to help them move forward in their lives, learn how to manage their feelings, or impulses in life that might impead their educational growth, learn more about themselves, share something that has been an obstacle in their life, etc.
  3. Choose one or more of the dates to implement your project.

When responding to this volunteer opportunity, please be as detailed with your ideas or wishes in the comment section. It helps me to move the process along more easily. As well, please state which area of the island you would like to facilitate the workshop.

Here are the dates and areas we are hoping to be filled:

July 12th - Friday evening in Hilo

July 13th - Saturday late afternoon/ evening in Hilo

July 23rd- Tues morning in Hilo

Description

Project Hawai'i, Inc., is a nonprofit organization run 100% by volunteers to enhance the lives of children living in poverty situations on the islands of Hawai'i. Our public supported charity works year round to provide necessities to children living in substandard housing situations, such as tents on the waters edge, abandon vehicles, and make-shift structures hidden in the bushes and hills.

Our agency provides children with holiday parties, meals and services for all the major holidays including Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Other monthly services include providing emergency support, hygiene, food, clothing and outreach to the children living in homeless situations on 3 of the islands of Hawai'i, the Big Island (Hawai'i), Mau'i and O'ahu.

Project Hawai'i also provides educational and nutritional programs that include after school reading and tutoring programs and our summer camp activities. Children will also receive full back to school support from new backpacks filled with supplies, new outfits, and shoes. We also provide other educational needs throughout the year.

Project Hawai'i Summer Camp has ran for 15 years and won several dozen awards in nutrition and educational support. This program is our largest endevor and evolves year after to year to include even more learning opportunities to our keiki.
