ORGANIZATION: Action for Boston Community Development

South End Neighborhood Service Center

General Description:

The South End Neighborhood Service Center is looking for college interns/ volunteers to help with various administrative and direct client service duties at the center.

Duties/Responsibilities:

September-December:

  • Meet and greet clients in the front lobby
  • Answer telephone and direct calls to appropriate staff
  • Conduct intake process and assist clients to determine service needs
  • Assist clients with applications for Food Pantry, Fuel Assistance, Cradle to Crayons, Housing Assistance, Holiday Assistance etc.
  • Maintain client records by filling and performing data entry
  • Pack food pantry bags and restock shelves (1pm-4pm)
  • Assist clients in proper completion of job applications and resumes for employment opportunities
  • Outreach to new clients via telephone, mail, and flyer distribution
  • Assist with turkey and toy distribution

January-April:

  • Meet and greet clients in the front lobby
  • Answer telephone and direct calls to appropriate staff
  • Outreach to clients for the upcoming tax seasons (schedule tax appointments)
  • Participate in training hosted by ABCD and the Boston EITC Coalition the includes training on using the tax preparation software (estimated 8 hours)
  • Become certified in tax preparation by completing the on-line link and complete taxes exam (1-2 hours). Scores are reported to ABCD Tax Site Coordinator and Boston EITC Coalition
  • Provide high quality tax assistance to all clients. Directly prepare clients’ tax returns
  • Tax training is held on Saturday

Skills & Qualifications:

Strong desire to help people and ability to work well with diverse populations; Ability to lift 50 lbs and climb stairs; Ability to learn and apply basic tax knowledge; Basic computer skills for inputting data entry and tax return information; Diligence in performing tasks completely and accurately; Ability to maintain clients confidentiality; Strong organization skills; Ability to sensitively and effectively communicate with individuals of diverse economic and cultural backgrounds; Bilingual: Spanish, Cantonese, and Mandarin encouraged to apply.

Length of Commitment:

Fall and/or Spring semester for 20 hours/week

Schedule (including day and time if applicable):

Monday (12pm-4pm); Tuesday- Friday (9am-4pm)
