Mission Statement

The Black Star Project, a 501(c)3 organization, is committed to improving the quality of life in the Black and Latino communities of Chicago by eliminating the racial academic achievement gap. The mission of The Black Star Project is to provide educational services that help pre-school through college students succeed academically with the support of their parents, families, schools and communities. Additionally, we help students aspire to post-secondary educational opportunities and training as they explore careers that will be emotionally, intellectually and financially rewarding. Our services are available to all students in Chicago Public Schools, particularly low-income Black and Latino students who attend low-achieving schools in disadvantaged communities.

Description

The Black Star Project recognizes the importance of working 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to build strong support among labor, government, business, environmental, educational, social service, foundation, corporate, community-based, and faith-based leaders to implement a parent/student-driven, comprehensive, systematic, collaborative, coordinated strategy to close the racial academic achievement gap. In order to achieve our goals, we concentrate on three main areas of initiative: student engagement, parental involvement, and advocacy. The Black Star Project carries out its multiple programs and varied approaches to closing the racial academic achievement gap in Chicago primarily through parent and student leadership development, public policy research and advocacy. A staff of five, augmented with the help of more than 300 volunteers, manages these initiatives. We provided services to approximately 14,000 individuals last year, the overwhelming majority of whom were economically and educationally disadvantages students.
