Understanding Disabilities, Inc. (UD), a non-profit organization incorporated in 1997, has provided disability awareness programming in the Reading Public Schools for 31 years. Each year, we teach 2400 first through 8th-graders to see beyond people's disabilities, and view other children as individuals and friends. Both the elementary and middle school programs encourage an awareness of all that people with disabilities can do and promote a culture of inclusion and respect. UD helps children gain awareness so they can understand each other's differences and incorporate respect in their daily interactions. We have quite a few exciting things happening with our organization, having recently celebrated our 30th anniversary and receiving a MA Senate commendation for our work. We have also creating an innovative disability awareness curriculum that we feel other communities and school systems would be interested in implementing in their schools as well. Due to budget cuts seven years ago, UD is funded by solely by donations. We utilize approximately 200 volunteers each year to make our program successful. We are looking for help in applying for grants. These grants would be used to fund portions of our program- such as speakers sessions or community-wide events.
