Are you creative and playful? Do you enjoy working with children?

You might have what it takes to be a Makerspace Mentor! Our Mentors work on a team with other educators to engage students between 5-13 years old at various activity stations where students might learn sewing, sculpting, drawing, coding, circuitry, robotics, crafting, mechanical engineering, or 3D design. As a Mentor, you don't need to be an expert in all of these subjects, but you'll need to have an open mind, and have fun while you're learning.

We would like to build a team with a diverse skillset. Makerspace hours are during lunchtime (from 10:30 AM-1:15 PM) and after school. To schedule a training session, visit ravenswoodmakerspace.squarespace.com/volunteer and fill out our Volunteer Interest Survey. After filling out our survey, sign up for a training session where you will meet the team and receive orientation in our Makerspace. Join us, and help create the school experience you always wished for!

Benefits:

  • Receive training in a variety of tech tools: milling machine, 3D printer, laser-cutter, Dash and Dot robots, sewing machine, soldering kit, circuitry kit
  • Improvise and collaborate with a team to create fun, educational activities
  • Gain teaching experience while building relationships with inquisitive, enthusiastic, young people
  • Use Makerspace resources to develop your own projects to inspire students

Requirements: Must be 18 or over. Regular volunteers will require a background check and TB test, and will be reimbursed for this expense.

About Ravenswood Makerspace Collaborative

Location:

Mission Statement

The Ravenswood City School District works collaboratively to create a quality instructional program which empowers students to make choices, achieve their personal best and be productive and responsible members of our society. The Ravenswood Makerspace Collaborative exists to introduce STEAM subjects to students outside of a typical classroom, allows them to develop hobbies and skill areas at their own pace, and encourages creativity in various forms.

Description

The Ravenswood City School District (RCSD) in San Mateo County is a unique academic environment that draws from the culturally rich communities of East Palo Alto and East Menlo Park. The ethnic make-up of the population is dominantly Hispanic (70%), African American (20%), Pacific Islander (9%) and other 1%. RCSD serves some 4,500 students in kindergarten through eighth grades in seven elementary schools, and a child development center. In addition, RCSD holds charters for five charter schools, including one high school.

Our school district takes pride in our Makerspace program, in which the subjects of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics come together in the form of lunchtime activities available to all students between Kindergarten and 8th grade. In these special classrooms equipped with art supplies and impressive technological tools, students are guided to explore activity stations at their own pace. Here, without the burden of grades, the students have the opportunity to discover their passions and express creativity.
