Compass to Care is a childhood cancer foundation focused on supporting a child’s cancer journey by scheduling and paying for travel arrangements.
We are currently seeking a Development Intern who will make a direct impact in the organization’s fundraising efforts. The Development Intern will support the CEO with fundraising efforts, including major gifts and direct appeals.
Start Date: ASAP
Duration: 2 months
An ideal candidate must:
- Be responsible, flexible, hard‐working, ethical, and committed to the mission of Compass to Care
- Possess a high level of organizational skills and be detail oriented
- Possess solid oral and written communication skills
- Be skilled at a variety of computer skills, e.g., Microsoft Word, Word Perfect Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat are mandatory; knowledge of InDesign and Photoshop a plus. ·
- Be able to operate standard office equipment (fax, photocopier, etc.)
- Be able to juggle multiple tasks
The Development Intern for Compass to Care will learn to:
- Conduct prospect research on individual, foundation, and corporate donors
- Contact supporters via telephone
- Perform thank you calls
- Maintain donor and grant databases and files, including calendaring deadlines, logging donations, generating and sending donor acknowledgements, logging donor appreciation efforts
- Assist staff with grant application writing and tracking
- Support staff with logistics associated with special events, including securing silent auction donations
- Work with CEO to implement development strategies
Compass to Care is dedicated to scheduling and paying for the travel arrangements families require to seek the best cancer treatment for their children.
Via the generosity of our donors, we can:
- Eliminate the financial burdens of cancer-related travel costs
- Remove the stress of planning a trip and traveling with a child who is ill
- Give hope for each child's cancer cure

Mission Statement
Compass to Care ensures children, whose parents have a financial, can access life-saving cancer treatment. We carry out this mission by scheduling and paying for cancer-related travel necessities so children can get from their homes to the best medical center for treatment. This includes airfare, bus fare, car rental, gasoline, lodging, parking fees, taxi fees, tolls and train fare.
Description
Having a child with cancer is hard.
Not being able to get to the hospital for treatment is heart-breaking. That's where we step in.
With a focus solely on helping with cancer-related travel needs, Compass to Care's aim is to help families whose children must travel for cancer treatment by:
- Eliminating some of the monetary burdens resulting from medically-necessary travel costs;
- Removing the physical and emotional stress that comes with planning a trip and traveling with a child who is ill;
- Providing peace of mind by removing travel costs so they can focus their energy on their child; and
- Giving hope that by getting to the right hospital they may save their child’s life from this devastating disease.
