Legal Assistance Volunteer

Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation (TNDC) provides affordable housing and services for low-income people in the Tenderloin and throughout San Francisco, to promote equitable access to opportunity and resources. Please check us out at www.tndc.org.

Position Summary

The position is a Legal Assistance Volunteer. This is a position for individuals with a passion for equity, diversity and integrity. You will be assisting in our community organizing department reviewing and editing documents that need to be legally binding.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Reviewing Community Benefits Agreements- ensuring the language is legally binding, adding new sections as appropriate
  • Phone calls/emails with TNDC staff about CBAs
  • Phone calls with attorneys representing the Developer side of the Community Benefits Agreements to negotiate terms

Basic Qualifications

  • Must have a J.D.; experience with housing or contract law preferred
  • Strong interest in one or more of the following areas: community development and/or community organizing.
  • Be culturally sensitive. We treat all people with respect and believe that different experiences and perspectives add value.

Required Characteristics

  • Enthusiastic. We need someone who is passionate about making a change and improving lives.
  • Team Player. Must be able to work well with others and coordinate tasks with good and clear communication.
  • Listener. This leadership role must be able to listen, understand the project's needs, challenges, opportunities, etc.

This organization is volunteer-based and the position is uncompensated. The schedule is flexible; we anticipate needing assistance once a month 5-10 hours.

Description

Founded in 1981, the Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation (TNDC) currently owns 32 buildings and houses over 3,000 San Franciscans--primarily people who earn $5,000 to $25,000 a year. Serving the Tenderloin and central-city neighborhoods, TNDC also provides support services, including social workers and the Tenderloin After-School Program, a drop-in center for neighborhood children.
