Need and Position Description
Human Rights First's Refugee Representation team seeks a volunteer in its Houston, Texas office to assist with a short-term data entry project (approximately 40 hours' worth of work). This position requires someone with excellent organizational and communication skills, as well as a familiarity with basic database maintenance. Additionally, knowledge of local social service agencies is a plus.
Background
The Refugee Representation team works to provide indigent asylum seekers with quality legal representation in their asylum cases. As Human Rights First clients wade through the protracted asylum process, they are most often without financial resources to provide for themselves and usually live in quite tenuous circumstances. Since Human Rights First is not a wrap-around service, we attempt to connect our clients with more comprehensive community service agencies that can more fully cater to their immediate (e.g., shelter, medical, food) and on-going needs.
Community service agencies often have requirements that those seeking assistance must meet in order to receive assistance, and these vary from place to place. Since our clients live in many different parts of the Houston Metro area and often lack reliable transportation, we make every attempt to seek out services in their immediate area so they can 1) more easily access the service organization and 2) meet the eligibility requirements that are usually zip code contingent.
We seek a volunteer to assist with data entry in order to compile a usable list of these local referral agencies.

About HUMAN RIGHTS FIRST

Mission Statement
Human Rights First is an independent advocacy and action organization that challenges America to live up to its ideals. We believe American leadership is essential in the global struggle for human rights, so we press the U.S. government and private companies to respect human rights and the rule of law. When they fail, we step in to demand reform, accountability and justice. Around the world, we work where we can best harness American influence to secure core freedoms. We know it is not enough to expose and protest injustice, so we create the political environment and policy solutions necessary to ensure consistent respect for human rights. Whether we are protecting refugees, combating torture, or defending persecuted minorities, we focus not on making a point, but on making a difference. For more than 35 years, we’ve built bipartisan coalitions and teamed up with frontline activists and lawyers to tackle global challenges that demand American leadership.
Description
Human Rights First is a non-profit, nonpartisan international human rights organization based in New York, Washington D.C. and Houston. To maintain our independence, we accept no government funding.
