Team Hope Walk

The Huntington’s Disease Society of America is a national non-profit focused on improving the lives of all those affected by HD (a fatal genetic disease). We are hosting the Annual Team Hope Run/Walk event on Saturday May 5th at Otsinigo Park in Binghamton NY. We are in need of volunteers to help with the race, registration, event set-up and more. It is our hope to include community members to help us raise awareness about this fatal disease affecting people in the Binghamton Community.

Mission Statement

The Huntington's Disease Society of America (HDSA) is dedicated to finding a cure for Huntington's Disease (HD) while providing support and services for those living with HD and their families. HDSA promotes and supports both clinical and basic HD research, aids families in coping with the multi-faceted problems presented by HD and educates the families, the public and health care professionals about Huntington's Disease. Our HD families give a face to Huntington's Disease. HDSA is its voice.

Description

Huntington's Disease (HD) is an inherited, progressively degenerative brain disorder that results in a loss of both mental faculties and physical control. Symptoms usually appear in an individual between 30-50 years of age and progress over a 10-25 year period. HD affects the individuals ability to think, speak and walk. Ultimately, the weakened individual succumbs to pneumonia, heart failure or other complications. Presently, there is no effective treatment or cure. Although medications can relieve some symptoms in certain individuals, research has yet to find a means of conquering or even slowing the deadly progression of HD.
