Step therapy is a type of utilization management tool used by payers to help control and contain rising healthcare costs. Sometimes called "fail first", step therapy policies require patients to try and fail another lower cost medication before the prescribed medication can be given, consequently preventing patients from accessing the prescribed care or treatments they need in a timely manner and potentially putting their health at risk.
If you’ve had trouble accessing the medication prescribed by your doctor because your insurance company has informed you that they want you to try other medications first, we need to hear your story! Your story can help pass patient-friendly policy in the state of Illinois.
We are working with a coalition of health care organizations to encourage Illinois lawmakers to improve the practice of step therapy. Specifically, we are concerned that the common use of step therapy is creating unnecessary hurdles and barriers for patients to access the best treatment option for their condition-as prescribed by their physician.
