The Texas Young Lawyers Association (TYLA) and the American College of Trial Lawyers (ACTL) are seeking volunteers to serve as witnesses for the preliminary rounds of the National Trial Competition finals. Our competition uses volunteers as witnesses to make the competition as realistic as possible. All you have to do is review a short transcript of your statements and then 'testify' during the trial round. You will be working with the best law students in the country. Most volunteers really enjoy their experience, especially the improv element and giving the law student competitors a run fir their money.

Competition is in Dallas on Thursday (3/28) and Friday (3.29).
ROUND 1: 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Thursday, March 28, 2019
ROUND 2: 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Thursday, March 28, 2019
ROUND 3: 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Friday, March 29, 2019

All materials necessary will be provided to you prior to the round. You can sign up for as many rounds as you are able to do.

Again, this is a volunteer opportunity and we appreciate you taking the time to attend and making this a great experience for our competitors. Anyone can participate over the age of 18. No experience necessary. We are authorized to sign for volunteer hours and community service participation as you will be serving the public service arm of the Texas State Bar.

Mission Statement

TYLA is commonly referred to as the "public service arm" of the State Bar of Texas. TYLA's primary purposes are to facilitate the administration of justice, foster respect for the law, and advance the role of the legal profession in serving the public.

Description

The National Trial Competition was established in 1975 to encourage and
strengthen law students’ advocacy skills through quality competition and valuable
interaction with members of the bench and bar. The program is designed to
expose law students to the nature of trial practice and to serve as a supplement to
their legal education. It is the Texas Young Lawyers Association’s intent to
provide a meaningful contribution to the development of future trial lawyers.
Past winners of the competition have shared their memories of competing and
one similar theme resonates: the experience has given them assurance of their
abilities and valuable professional contacts. We hope that your experience will be
just as meaningful and that your success in this competition will follow you as a
successful lawyer.
