Volunteers Needed to Clean Occoquan River -

The water supply for most of Eastern Prince William & Fairfax Counties

On Saturday, September 24, 2022 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. (rain date October 1, 2022), Prince William Trails and Streams Coalition (PWTSC), a 501(c)3 organization, is conducting its 13th annual clean-up of the upper Occoquan River, from nine different sites along 25+ miles of the Occoquan River. The cleanup ranges from Cedar Run/Broad Run, through Lake Jackson, and from the base of Lake Jackson Dam to Hooes Run (south of Lake Ridge Marina).

During the 2021 cleanup, 253 Volunteers o n both water and land collected 234 bags of trash, many tires and over 2,000 pounds of trash.

Homeowners associations, civic associations, and businesses are encouraged to come out to help in this effort.

Experienced kayakers, canoeists, Jon boaters, and pontoon boaters are also requested for the on-the-water portion of this conservation effort. Boaters will have to coordinate put-ins and pickups between themselves.

The Prince William Soil and Water Conservation District (PWSWCD) is focused on protecting and enhancing our water and soil resources in Prince William County, an area encompassing 316 square miles with 25% of the land used for agricultural purposes.

Description

The District is funded by Prince William County Department of Public Works, Stormwater Management Division and the Department of Conservation and Recreation, Division of Soil and Water Conservation.

The District is governed by a five-member Board of Directors: three are elected, one is appointed by a state board and one is a Virginia Cooperative Extension agent. The District staff consists of a District Manager, Office Manager, Conservation Specialist, Conservation Planner, and an Education and Outreach Specialist.
