The Ward 8 Farmer's Market seeks volunteers for our new educational initiative at Martin Luther King Elementary School in Congress Heights.
Starting in late March 2016, the Market Manager and Community Educator will be working with students to build and operate a vegetable garden on school grounds.
Most school days from 3:30 to 4:30 a group of students will either come out to the garden or do a related lesson in doors. We seek volunteers to:
-assist with the construction of raised beds
-instruct and supervise children in grades PK through 5 in planting, weeding, watering, cultivating, pruning and harvesting
-present classroom-based lessons and activities on gardening, nutrition, cooking, and the environment
-maintain the garden during the summer when school is out
Volunteers must pass a criminal background check and TB test in order to be registered with DC Public Schools.
Volunteers will get to take home vegetables from the garden.
The frequency and duration of commitment is flexible.
Gardening experience is a plus but not required.
