ORGANIZATION: Families Forward

volunteering at the store

During the summer months when school is out, low-income children do not receive much-needed food assistance through the free/reduced lunch program, and often go hungry. Families turn to Families Forward’s Food Pantry to keep their children fed. As a result, the food pantry shelves become nearly bare! In an effort to keep the shelves stocked and feed hungry children, we will be once again hosting our Spring Community Food Drive. This food drive has been essential in keeping up with the seasonal demand during the busy summer months. Here is how it works:

  • Volunteers (up to four at a time) stand outside grocery stores for a 2-3 hour shift, to greet shoppers and explain they are collecting food for Families Forward to help provide food for families in need. Many shoppers are very happy to pick up a few extra items to donate.
  • When shoppers come out of the store, volunteers collect donated items in a grocery cart.
  • At the end of the shift, volunteers who worked the shift bring the food to the Families Forward pantry.

This year, our Spring Food Drive will take place on Saturday, March 11th from 9am - 3pm and Sunday, March 12th from 11:00am-3:00pm. We are hoping to have volunteer groups (up to 4 volunteers at a time) stationed outside of 15 local grocery stores on each day for a 2-3 hour shift. Families Forward would like to invite your group to be a part of our Spring Food Drive this year!

This is a fun-filled opportunity that is great for groups, teams, and families with young children, as you can volunteer together for a great cause! For more information on how to help - call Janette Perez at Families Forward, 949-379-8373.
