JOB TITLE:Athlete Leadership Chairperson and ALPS Committee

PURPOSE: To promote the understanding of Athlete Leadership and identify potential athletes and volunteers to work toward participating in meaningful roles within Special Olympics and transition into athlete leadership training.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Help identify athletes in each local training program that have leadership potential

  • Encourage athlete volunteer participation in county activities

  • Develop an informal and then formal Athlete Input Counsel with athletes who have met certain criteria

  • Help identify volunteers who would make good mentors, and facilitators and trainers

  • Attend and fully participate in Area ALPS meetings/orientations

  • Assist with conducting the Orientation to Athlete leadership in the county or area programs

  • Attend state-wide training if offered for County ALPS directors

  • Provide on-going feedback to the County Director and management team members as to what athletes may be potential leaders for state training

  • Ensure health, safety and risk management guidelines are disseminated during all relevant training sessions. (General Orientation and Protective Behaviors)

  • Host a booth/table at Games, Fairs, and events that would attract potential athletes

  • Help Work ALPs booth at area competitions

    TIME REQUIREMENTS: Year round. Will vary depending on size of Area

    QUALIFICATIONS: The volunteer must:

  1. Have good organizational, management, supervision and communications skills

  2. Have experience and knowledge of working with people; especially athletes

  3. Experience with Special Olympics preferred (a certified Special Olympics coach, official, or Games Director is preferred).

  4. Willing to attend training to enhance the understanding of Athlete Leadership (WebEx type training and/or live training)

  5. Attend one Introduction to Athlete Leadership or Governance Workshop

    EVALUATION: Quarterly Reports, number of athletes recruited into the program, number of County ALPs Coordinators recruited, number of booths/tables hosted, trainings attend.
