We are currently recriting adult volunteers who are able to asist a couple of hours a month - weekdays.

A new Palo Alto Junior Museum and Zoo is being planned for the community - breaking ground in 2017. The new JMZ will create new homes for the animals, and allow more space and programming for our visitors. We need to know how many people currently visit the JMZ in order to plan for the future of this exciting project.

From now until next spring, we are undertaking a year-long project to count our visitors six days a month. We are currently recruiting volunteers who enjoy working with families and children to help us.

Volunteers can sign-up for one or more shifts per day/month. Two volunteers will be assigned per shift - 3 shifts Tues-Sat, 1 shift on Sunday) Volunteers will greet visitors at the front entrance and count them using methods provided by the museum staff.

We are currently recruiting volunteers who have the ability to volunteer during weekdays, such as people who work part-time, college students and seniors. There are very few weekend spots left through the end of the project as these days have already been filled with volunteers. Volunteers must be at least 14 years old and all must fill-out a one page information sheeet. Those over age 18 who volunteer more than once must get live-scan fingerprinting through the City of Palo Alto.

Now recruiting for these volunteer audience count dates:

Oct 19 th (second or third shift), Oct 21 st (all shifts), Oct 27 th (first shift), Nov. 9 th (2 nd or third shifts), Dec. 2 nd (all shifts are open), Sat. Dec. 9 th (all shifts are open), Dec. 13 th (all shifts).

January: 24, 26

February: 3, 7, 8, 22

March: 2, 3, 9, 24

April: 5, 7, 11, 28

Shifts are between 2-3 hours in length.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to engage a child's curiosity in science and nature.

Description

The JMZ is a place where children and their caregivers come to explore, discover, create and play. Through hands-on science exhibits and a diverse community of live animals, your child's natural scientist will be nurtured.

The Zoo is home to more than 50 species of animals-about 200 specimens in all-many of which are brought into classrooms as part of the Junior Museum & Zoo's science outreach program with local schools. Some of the animals include bobcats, raccoons, jungle bats, hedgehogs, ferrets, snakes, fresh water fish and invertebrates, birds, turtles and a giant tortoise!

We offer a menagerie of science programs for schools and community groups, as well as classes, summer camps and birthday parties for families.

Over the next two years the Junior Museum and Zoo will be building a new science center, and will be temporarily offering its programs and services for the community at the Cummberly Center, Palo Alto at 4000 Middlefield Rd., Palo Alto, CA.
