The Caregiver Respite Volunteer provides companionship and safety for an older adult who is experiencing isolation or some form of compromised health; this companionship allows the older adult’s caregiver to take a break.

Time: Weekly two hour visit; initial commitment of six months.

Responsibilities include:

  • Attending initial training and periodic volunteer meetings
  • Attending an annual training regarding elder rights
  • Following all program procedures
  • Observing and reporting changes in the mental and physical status of the older adult
  • Recording all volunteer hours and activities on the monthly form

Duties include:

  • When applicable, ensuring the older adult’s safety and comfort while the caregiver is away
  • Assisting the older adult, if needed, with tasks such as reading, sorting mail, making phone calls, etc.
  • Enabling the older adult, if appropriate, to enjoy activities such as walking, shopping, visiting the senior center, etc.
  • Encouraging the older adult to share his or her life story
  • Listening to the older adult’s concerns and offering reassurance
  • Informing the older adult about other community resources
  • Responding appropriately to emergencies
