ORGANIZATION: Companions Journeying Together, Inc

  • 29 people are interested

The Aunt Mary's Storybook project brings into the DeKalb County Jail, located in Sycamore, a selection of books, along with audio recorders. We assist participating individuals in custody in choosing an age-appropriate book for each of their children. The participants are then given an opportunity to record him or herself reading the books for their children. On behalf of the incarcerated mother or father, our organization then sends the books and recordings to the children.

We are looking for a volunteer to go on a monthly basis (First Friday of each month from 10 AM until 12 noon) to the DeKalb County Jail to help incarcerated parents choose their books and to assist with the recording sessions. This volunteer will be accompanied by an existing volunteer.

Volunteers must be open to working with diverse populations and justice-involved populations. Further, the volunteer should be flexible to changing schedules and/or session cancellations due to facility lockdowns, etc. A background check will be conducted.

Please contact us if you are interested. You will then be directed to our website to complete a volunteer application:
