Our free medical clinic in Tacoma hosts the Medical Teams International Mobile Dental unit once a month, sometimes twice a month, to treat adult patients with no dental insurance. As most dentists know, there is a huge need for dental care. Many of the patients who sign up for the dental van have not had care in years and the help changes their lives and improves their overall health. Free malpractice insurance is available through the state's Volunteer and Retired Physician program if dentists' employers do not cover volunteer work off-site.

We have had extreme difficulty finding enough dentists to volunteer to host the mobile unit as often as our funding allows, which in turn jeopardizes future funding. Meanwhile, we have a waiting list of patients.

We would be happy to connect interested dentists with the coordinator for more information. Services offered on the self-contained dental van with two chairs include exams, x-rays, simple extractions, root canals, crowns, fillings...pretty much everything a dentist in private practice would provide for adult patients, with the difference being that the dental van patients general have acute dental issues or general decay after years of lack of care. The MTI coordinator works with an area oral surgeon for those things that cannot be handled on the unit.

Your help can change lives. We hope you will consider this volunteer opportunity. We have found in some other communities in the state, there is an abundance of volunteer dentists, so we think we just haven't found the right medium to get the word out. Please contact us if you are a dentist who can help!
