Thousands of Minnesotans will die of a terminal illness this year. You can make a difference by joining our team of Vigil Companions who provide bedside presence during the last days and hours of life.
Vigil Companions serve hospice patients wherever they call home. This may be a skilled nursing facility, or a private residence. They provide a calming presence for those who are dying alone, and they may assist in supporting family caregivers.
Each patient and visit is unique, however in most cases bedside vigil support may include:
- sitting quietly holding the patient’s hand
- playing soft music via the radio/cd
- placing a cool cloth on the patient’s forehead
- updating staff in the skilled nursing facility regarding the patient’s condition
- praying/providing words of support
- providing a short break for family caregivers to sleep
We care for patients in the eleven county metro area, allowing you to serve in the location that works best for you. This position is on-call and is staffed between the hours of 6:00 am-12:00am midnight. We do request a time commitment of 52 volunteer hours a year.
Not sure you’re qualified for this role? No problem. The journey to working with patients who have a limited life expectancy, and their family members requires careful preparation. That is why we have an extensive online training program designed to prepare you for the experiences ahead. The convenience of online learning allows you to access the information anytime, anywhere, and to work at your own pace.
We believe it is a gift to serve others at this sacred time. If you feel called to this meaningful volunteer opportunity, we'd love to hear from you.
