A citizen can be a volunteer to be a Local Board Member for the Selective Service System (SSS). SSS Local Board Members are part of a group of citizen volunteers whose mission, upon a draft, will be to decide who among the registrants in their community will receive deferments, postponements, or exemptions from military service based on the individual registrant's circumstances and beliefs. There are currently Local Board positions open in Wisconsin for residents of Walworth, Milwaukee, Waukesha, Crawford, Juneau, Dunn, Brown, Chippewa, Eau Claire, Jackson, marquette, Winnebago, Wood, and Adams Counties. If you know of any residents of these counties who might be interested in becoming SSS Local Board Members, please let me know. Prospective board members must:
·Be a citizen of the United States ·Be at least 18 years old ·Be registered with Selective Service, if a male ·Not be an employee of any law enforcement occupation ·Not be an active or retired member of the armed forces ·Not have been convicted for any criminal offense Once identified as qualified candidates for appointment, they are recommended by the governor and appointed by the director of the Selective Service System, who acts on behalf of the President. New members receive five hours of initial training after appointment, followed by two hours of annual training for as long as they remain in the position. They may serve in board member positions up to a total of 20 years, if desired.
