Get Up and Go Program at the Peninsula Jewish Community Center: Find room in your heart to help seniors who have trouble getting to medical appointments or shopping because they no longer drive. All Volunteers need to have email and/or voicemail. Volunteers must attend a pre-service interview and complete a registration packet. Applicants must pass a screening process that includes a criminal background check wich can take one to two weeks, additional requirements for driving volunteers.
Driver Volunteers use their own cars to take non-driving older adults to medical, dental, and personal appointments, or for errands such as banking or food and other shopping. Rides are available throughout San Mateo County except coastside. Qualifications/Skills Needed: Must enjoy working with people. Volunteers need to be patient and have a positive attitude about working with seniors. Awareness of client safety is essential. Previous experience with seniors is a plus. DMV report and reference check. Driving records are either unblemished or close to it. Volunteers must have a recent model, reliable car that will not be difficult for a senior to get in and out of.
All drivers must show proof of insurance on the vehicle that will be used to transport seniors. Drivers must have the minimum liability required by the State of California. A thorough training is provided. The process can take one to two weeks. Time Commitment Needed: 3-4 hours each week for regular shift drivers; on-call, as available drivers also needed.
Administrative Volunteer Job Description: The volunteers will answer incoming calls requesting service and will make outgoing calls to seniors as part of our registration process. Incoming calls will be answered at the PJCC facility. Outgoing calls may be made from home. Volunteers will keep track of call activity on PJCC computers. Qualifications/Skills Needed: Must enjoy speaking with people over the phone. Volunteers need to be patient and have a positive attitude about working with seniors. Previous experience with seniors is a plus. Some competence with Word and Excel.

Outreach and Marketing Volunteer for Get Up & Go program the volunteer will assist with the following: Recruit volunteer drivers who use their own cars to take isolated seniors where they need to go. Provide outreach and marketing activities to seniors, service providers and adult children of elderly to inform them about our transportation services. Volunteer Job Description: Volunteer will make outbound calls to service providers, handle a quarterly email and send out marketing materials as needed. Volunteer will "person" a table/booth along with or in place of the Outreach Organizer at senior fairs in San Mateo County. Volunteer will research and identify organizations and groups to help recruit drivers. Must enjoy speaking with people over the phone and in person. Volunteers need to be patient and have a positive attitude about working with seniors. Previous sales experience helpful. Time Commitment Needed: 3-4 hours each week. Can be done from home if desired, as long as the volunteer is proficient with email and is able to drop off paperwork weekly.

RSVP provides opportunities for people 55 and over to make a difference in their community through volunteer service. RSVP volunteers contribute anywhere from a few to over forty hours a week, serving through schools, day care centers, police departments, hospitals and other nonprofit and public organizations to help meet critical community needs. RSVP offers maximum flexibility and choice to its volunteers. RSVP matches the personal interests and skills of older Americans with opportunities to help solve community problems and offers supplemental insurance while on duty, pre-service orientation, and on-the-job training from the agency or organization where volunteers are placed.
