About

Have you ever wanted to do something AMAZING but didn't know where to start? Here is an opportunity to help some wonderful people who have just moved to America learn how to speak English and, especially, learn how to read. The American Youth Literacy Foundation has teamed up with IHM Center for Literacy to help teach adults how to read and to advance our mission to end the literacy crisis in America. IHM is a vibrant English as a Second Language school catering to adults from numerous countries who are here now and need to learn English. Some of these adults have never read in their lives. If you can imagine how the face of a student brightens the moment they begin to truly understand how to communicate, this is the moment and the feeling that you can help bring to your students when you volunteer as a reading teacher. IHM Center for Literacy is a long established school and the American Youth Literacy Foundation is, we believe, the top literacy organization in the country. We will train you and give you all the materials you need to be successful. All of this is completely FREE to you. You may already be a teacher, a retired teacher or someone who wants to learn a lifelong skill and make a real difference for real people in your community. We are looking for up to two candidates who have exceptional patience (the kind of patience you might need to rehabilitate a stroke victim). We are seeking up to two tutors who are willing to learn a special rehabiliitative reading curriculum that is designed to retrain the brain to understand written code and is different from anything you were taught in school. If you want to help change people's lives and have exceptional patience and are willing to learn an entirely new way to teach reading, then we will train you and give you the opportunity to embark on this incredibly fulfilling mission.
