Would you like to help very low-income families in crisis connect with the community resources that can help them establish stability? This may be the perfect opportunity for you!

The families we work with attend Sunday Friends, where 200 to 300 very low-income family members participate each Sunday in an all-afternoon program to improve their lives, learn important skills, and give back to the community. For their participation, they earn tickets to buy their basic necessities at our Sunday Friends store.

During the programs, we often learn of a family’s crisis situation and decide that we’d like to help them with the situation outside of the program. Frequently a family goes into crisis due to loss of job, loss of housing, domestic violence, mental health issues, or another situation. We have established a new Advocacy program, whereby a volunteer advocate can work with a family in crisis to connect them with the resources that can help them.

As an Advocate, you would work under the supervision of an experienced Advocate leader who will help you build an action plan for each family. This could involve meetings at schools, CalWorks and other agencies, medical clinics, and a variety of other community resources.

The Advocate job requires 5-10 hours per week (sometimes during the day), a willingness to stand up and fight for the resources to which the family is entitled, and good communications skills to ensure that the right questions are asked and answered and that our family understands the answers. For more information on the Sunday Friends program, visit our website at www.sundayfriends.org. For more information about the Advocacy role, please respond to this posting and we’ll talk.
