About

We are looking for Teaching Assistants to help us teach the art of photography to children and teens living with cancer!

The mission of The Pablove Foundation is to invest in under-funded, cutting-edge pediatric cancer research, inspire cancer families through education, and improve the lives of children living with cancer through the arts.

Pablove Shutterbugs, a program of The Pablove Foundation, teaches children living with cancer to develop their creative voice through the art of photography. In an educational setting, the five-week program instructs children to tell their story through photographs using perspective, light, composition, and technique. Our Shutterbugs are taught basic principles of photography while learning on digital point-and-shoot cameras provided by Pablove, and reflect on their work. The cameras are theirs to keep at the end of the course.

Teaching Assistants should commit to all five classes during the Spring session (classes are 2 hours in length and are held on Saturdays - April 8, April 15, April 22, April 29 + May 6; volunteer hours are from 11:00 am-2:30pm). Your total time commitment will be approximately 15-20 hours.

You will be supervised and trained by the lead Teaching Artist. Your primary role is to support the Teaching Artist in a multitude of ways. The larger class group will be divided into three smaller groups for activities according to student age, with each group led by a different Teaching Assistant. It will be your job to work closely with the kids in your age group using age appropriate language and techniques and to answer any questions that they may have. Some previous experience in photography is required, professional experience being a plus. Administrative duties such as downloading student photos, taking attendance, checking in with families, and end-of-day cleanup, will also be the responsibility of Teaching Assistants.

Previous working experience with children in arts education is a plus, but most important is an enthusiastic and positive attitude while working with the students. One Teaching Assistant should also be available to travel to the hospital and conduct bedside lessons if a student is undergoing treatment or not feeling well enough to attend class. Bilingual skills are also a plus. All volunteers will undergo a background check. This is a great opportunity for college students looking to fulfill service hours or gain hands-on experience in a classroom environment!
