Volunteer Teacher’s Assistant

Immigration Services

Background: Founded in 1918, Catholic Charities of Los Angeles is a leading non-profit organization that provides permanent residents with a path to citizenship through free and low-cost legal services. The organization’s Immigration Services offers ESL/civics classes at Los Angeles Public Library branches to prepare naturalization applicants to take the Citizenship Test.

Purpose: By assisting the ESL/ civics teacher, the Volunteer Teacher’s Assistant will help immigrants move toward the goal of becoming a US citizen.

If you are passionate about helping adult learners accomplish their goal of becoming a U.S. citizen, volunterring with Catholic Charities may be the volunteer opportunity you were looking for.

Responsibilities:

  • Administer placement tests during orientation/ registration.

  • Provide one on one support for students who need additional attention.

  • Distribute materials and give students direction as needed.

  • Assist with instruction per teacher’s request.

  • Practice interviewing with student, mock simulation, of the Naturalization examination.

Qualifications:

  • Interested in tutoring or gaining teaching experience.

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication.

  • Cultural sensitivity.

  • Desire to work with people from other cultures and limited English speakers.

  • Background in U.S. History, Government, Political Science, Sociology, Chicano Latino Studies preferred but not required.

  • Bilingual preferred but not required.

Commitment: Approximatelya 14 week commitment from May 31st - August 31st 2016, 3 hours per week. every Wednesday from 4:30-7:30pm or Tuesday/Thursday from 6-7:30pm. Remote volunteer opportunies at our Vernon ESL/Civics class Wednesday 4;30-7:30pm and Juniperro Serra Library 10am-1pm (Both located in South LA).

Training: The Volunteer Teacher’s Assistant will receive training from immigration staff in the citizenship process, client demographics, types of adult learners, and strategies for student engagement. This position is supervised by the ESL/civics instructor. Must complete an orientation session/training prior to start date.

Location(s):

Three locations are available: 1530 James M. Wood Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA, 90015 (Main office) (Monday/Wednesday 6:00-7:30pm) (Tuesday/Thursday 6:00-7:30pm) and the Vernon Library: 4504 South Central Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90011 (Wednesday evening), Juniperro Serra Library: 4607 S. Main St. Los Angeles, CA 90037 (Saturday morning)

Benefits: This is a volunteer position that offers insight into the operations of a nonprofit organization and hands-on experience to enhance one’s resume. Volunteers will gain training in ESL instruction and the opportunity to interact with clients and staff from around the world.
