Samaritans, Inc. is the premier suicide prevention organization in the communities of Greater Boston and MetroWest, providing lifesaving services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Samaritans' purpose is to alleviate despair, isolation, distress and suicidal feelings among individuals in our community, to educate the public about suicide prevention and to reduce the stigma associated with suicide.

We are currently seeking summer volunteers and interns to staff our 24/7 suicide prevention helplines. Samaritans provides emotional support through our traditional phone helpline and our new text helpline. Volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization and while they come from many different backgrounds and experiences they share a desire to make our community stronger through the simplicity of human connection.

Successful candidates will possess the ability to empathize with others and have strong listening skills. No previous experience is required; all volunteers receive training that will equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills to provide emotional support to callers on both the phone line and text line. Trainings are provided monthly which include 32 hours of classroom instruction followed by 15-20 hours of practicum (hours flexible for practicum portion of the training).

We are currently looking for interns and volunteers for our accelerated summer program. Commitment is 150 hours of service, done in 3-4 four hour helpline shifts a week, with 2 overnight shifts a month.

To begin the application process, interested candidates must first submit a volunteer inquiry online. Interested candidates must then fill out an application and come into the office for an interview.

Please visit our website at www.samaritanshope.org/volunteering to submit an online inquiry and view our information session video.
