Volunteer Description:

AGAPE and the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank have partnered with local schools throughout Columbia County to offer the BackPack Weekend Food program. This program gives children at risk of hunger a back pack filled with nutritious, child-friendly, nonperishable meals to fill the gap they face on weekends. We are looking for volunteers who can help with the various tasks and/or delivery of food items to local schools to ensure our kids receive food every Friday. Please let us know if you are interested in helping a specific school.

Covered Schools:

  • Benton Area Elementary School
  • Columbia County Christian School
  • Millville Elementary School
  • Head Start Locations:
    • Bloomsburg Children’s Center
    • Bloomsburg Town Park Village
    • Berwick Child & Family Center
    • Benton Head Start
    • Millville Head Start
    • Sullivan County Head Start

How You Can Help:

  • Collect and drop off plastic shopping bags to AGAPE to help prepare our bags for packing
  • Help pack bags with food - some packing may take place directly at the school
  • Have a fund and/or food drive to help collect easy-to-open, kid-friendly, nonperishable foods ***Collected funds can go to support your selected school or will be allocated to all participants based on school enrollment***
  • Transport food from AGAPE to schools, as needed **MUST HAVE OWN VEHICLE**

Requirements:

  • Dependable and punctual
  • Courteous, friendly and respectful
  • Respect and maintain confidentiality of clients
  • The ability to life 10-30 pounds is helpful but not required
  • A child abuse and criminal background check are required for volunteers that may deliver backpacks to the schools
  • Ability to remain comfortable and focused in a continuously changing environment that requires constant organization.

Training and Supervision:

Volunteers must first attend a Volunteer orientation. Backpack Food Volunteers will then receive hands-on training with a member of the DailyBread and/or StoreMore team. Volunteers will have direct access to a staff supervisor for questions, issues or concerns while performing their job.

Days/Hours of Operation:

AGAPE is open during the following hours:

Monday, Tuesday and Friday - 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM and Thursday - 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Time Commitment:

Applicants considering this opportunity are asked to commit to 3-5 hours per month for a minimum of at least three months.

Description

AGAPE is a non-denominational, faith-based mission to serve the people in our area. Our goal is to "fill in the gaps" which currently exist between people in need, and the community services available to assist them. We refuse to allow good people to fall through cracks in the systems that were designed to help them.
