Did you know that currently 54% of students in Yolo County do not read at grade level? Students who don't read proficiently by the end of third grade are 4 times more likely to drop out of high school.
Woodland United Way is looking for volunteer tutors to close the holes in students' phonics knowledge, allowing them to become better readers and life-long learners.
As a Read to Succeed Tutor, you would volunteer at least one hour each week in a first or second grade classroom at Prarie or Gibson Elementary School. Tutors must be able to attend one 3 hour training before beginning their work in the classroom. Each session, the tutor will work with two children, reading, using magnetic letters and writing out sentences.
Tutoring times will be scheduled during the school day (8:30 am to 2:30 pm), but we can accomodate volunteers' schedules. No previous teaching experience required!
