New England Baptist Hospital apprenticeship
Apprentices learn about different blood types and examine disease specimens in the lab at New England Baptist Hospital

We're in the dreams and plans business and need your help. Our small board of six is expanding. We are seeking individuals who bring a diverse perspective and management experience and who are committed to improving the lives of Boston's underserved youth by introducing them to wider career opportunities.

Ideal candidates for our board bring vibrant professional networks, financial and analytical skills, and a willingness to ask friends and colleagues to support Apprentice Learning.

We are a diverse group of committed professionals who value and respect what each member brings to the table. Board attendance is 95%. We can offer an engaging, positive board environment with well-run, thoughtful meetings and clear tasks. We value your time!

Our recruitment process includes a number of steps, including an interview with the Board Development Committee and will occur over several months.

We meet bi-monthly, including a one-day board retreat. Additional work (average 3 hrs/month) is expected. Meetings are currently held in Jamaica Plain (T accessible and parking available).

If you are intrigued, we'd like to meet you! Email the Executive Director, Helen Russell for an initial conversation.

Mission Statement

Apprentice Learning provides real-world work experiences for middle school students. We leverage career exploration to teach skills and to nurture dreams.

Description

"All young people have dreams but not all have plans. Apprentice Learning inspires urban middle school students to nurture career dreams and make plans to achieve them."--Helen Russell, Executive Director, Apprentice Learning

Overview
Apprentice Learning (AL) offers career education programs for middle school students in Boston Public Schools that are designed to teach essential work skills and habits, expose students to a variety of careers, and introduce students to adults who are passionate about their professions. We help students make a clear connection between success in school and a satisfying, productive work life.

AL was established in 2012 in response to the high dropout rate in Boston. Growing evidence suggests that career exploration must begin early for under-resourced and at-risk young people. By teaching positive work habits and engaging young people in apprenticeships that match their interests, AL helps students gain a sense of purpose and a clear understanding of the link between career and academic success.

AL serves over 300 seventh and eighth grade students per year in five partner schools in Jamaica Plain, Roxbury, and Brighton. Our 60+ worksite partners include small businesses, financial institutions, human service organizations, STEM-related businesses, and cultural organizations.
