ORGANIZATION: Alzheimer's Association Oregon & SW Washington Chapter

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.
  • 10 people are interested

Sing Here Now is Portland's first choir for people with Alzheimer's and related dementias. The chor provides an opportunity for people and their care partners to enjoy music and socialize with other people living with Alzheimer’s. Although the focus of the choir is social interaction, participants also benefit from the wellness aspects of singing, such as reduced stress and improved mood.

Sing Here Now volunteers:

  • Greet the participants and welcome them to the choir
  • Make a connection to the participants and their care partners. Learn their hobbies, interests, etc
  • Put the choir participants first
  • Arrive on time and remain at the site for the duration of their shift
  • Support an environment which focuses on the development of a community - not perfect singing
  • Provide support for participants during break times
  • Help with room set-up including: nametags, song books, checking off roster, set up chairs, etc
  • Help with room clean-up. All materials should be packed away and the room should be reset to its condition prior to the session
  • Ask for help when they need it
  • Contact the choir director and their Alzheimer’s Association staff (by phone) as soon as possible if they’re running late or can’t make it to a session
  • Notify choir director and their Alzheimer’s Association staff if a participant’s transportation is unreliable

Sing Here Now volunteers may also:

  • Wait outside the room/building to make sure attendees arrive safely
  • Provide extra supervision for participants who may be prone to wandering or disorientation
  • Accompany a participant from the choir (on a walk, to a different room, etc) if they need a break from the session
  • Help with documentation of participant quotes, statements, etc
  • Sing with the choir, but are not required to do so
  • Attend extra concerts when requested if they are able and willing
