Volunteer Triage Nurses play an important role in setting the tone for the visit and expediting Clinic flow. Their core duties consist of placing the patient in the room by calling them from the waiting room, stopping at the scales to weigh and taking them to one of the exam rooms. The nurse will then take their BP, T, heart rate, O2 saturation and respiratory rate. The BMI needs to be documented and discussed with the patient. There are BMI charts in each room. The nurse will then document the chief complaint and include any relevant information in the triage note.

It is very important that the medication list be reconciled at each visit. The patients are required to bring their medications with them. The medication list needs to be recopied when indicated.
For a new patient, the nurse should check the comprehensive health history, surgical history, vaccinations, social history and preventative test list for accuracy.

This volunteer will be a RN, LPN, Medical Assistant or pharmacy student that has been properly trained and checked off for competency by the Clinic Charge Nurse, the Director of Clinical Services or the Volunteer Nurse that may be doing the training.
